FLW Tour # 5 Kentucky Lake, Water Temp: Kentucky-79 Barkley-83 Post Spawn
Being that the ride to Kentucky was going to be somewhere between 14 and 16 hours, I decided to leave at 3:45 am. The drive went by quickly and I arrived at the local tackle shop at 5pm central time. Berkley was having a Pro night there and I met up with Suggs and Morehead. We worked the event until 8 and then drove out to the camper that we were staying in. It was a nice camper with air conditioning, satellite tv, a kitchen, a couch; it was awesome. And best of all it was free!
Dan was sleeping in one room and Suggs and I were sharing another room. I told Suggs that if he snored at all during this tournament I would suffocate him while he was sleeping. The alarm went off entirely too early. I still had nothing tied on for the tournament and pretty much threw my stuff together in a big heap and into Dans boat. Dan has lived by the lake for his whole life and has won tons of money fishing here. He doesn’t like Kentucky Lake though, and spends most of his time fishing on Barkley Lake. The two lakes are connected by a short canal and either lake can be fished during the tournament. We launched about 30 miles away, mid-lake on Barkley. The first spot we pull up on is loaded with short fish (under 15”). We caught about 15 fish before I caught a small keeper on a football jig. By the days end, we had fished for 13 hours and that one keeper was it for the day. Dan was seriously disappointed and concerned about the rest of practice. BASS had just absolutely crushed the fish here the week before and now the bass were nowhere to be found. Later on we heard from Suggs that they caught over 100 bass, but only 2 keepers. That was pretty much what we heard all around; lots and lots of fish being caught, but only a few keepers.
