FWIW..Lurker Joe and I went to Teds Sat am with a five gallon bucket and bought 10 dozen greenies. We still had room in there for more. At $4/doz that would be more than $40.

The crabs you get at Ted's are mostly from local waters and are the smaller green crabs. I have found them to be fresh and seem to last longer. A lot of the bait stores get them from a New Jersey supplier and you will have bigger crabs and the orange bottom type. This is why a 5 gallon bucket amount will differ.

The orange bottom crabs are larger and produced larger fish. Too bad they could only get me wrinkled old twentys. Have to try harder so I can have Crispy Fiftys next time :p

I am new to this thread and new to Tog fishing. I truly appreciate all of the great info posted on this board and others. I am wondering what the ideal size is for green crabs as bait. I rigged up one of those homemade traps (thanks for the tip!) and caught a bunch of crabs raging in size from a halfdollar up to about 2.5" inches wide (excluding legs). I understand that I should cut the bigger ones in half, but should the smaller ones be fished whole? Thank you for the advice.
do yourself a favor and sign up for Ebates. Get money back on many of your online purchases. I have received almost $700 back using Ebates on purchases.
I fish the smaller ones whole, just crack the shell a little as mentioned before to let the scent ooze out...the big ones you can cut in half. I am a firm believer in big baits=big fish.
