Sorry for the late comeback.
Drill a lot of 3/8 - 5/8 holes in a 5 gallon bucket. Bottom and all around must have a lot so the crabs can smell the bait. Top must also have a few sothe air will not get traped and caose trat to float. Take a Quart size container like you get from chinese soup. Remove it's bottom. Cut the center of the lid just enough for it to fit through to the lip or top of the container. Tie it securely by making about 8 nail size holes in the bucket top and the container in identical locations and secure lid and bucket top together with large fishing like or wire or wire ties. TRAP IS MADE!
I remove the handles and drill 2 holes where they were. Put a line through in place of the handle and use knots on the inside of the bucket to secure.
I put a lobster bait bag attached to the bottom and fill it with bait and a brick in the bucket.
Attach a line to the handle and toss into the eater or just hang on the bottom below your boat if you are in salt water.
The crabs will use the holes to climb up to the top and fall into the container top. They can not crawl back up the smooth plastic of the container. I have gotten as many as 60 at a time using this method.
To make the lid easier to get off cut every other tab and the remaining four tabs will be sufficient enough to keep the lid on.
Best I can do. Hope it helped.
Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It's more important than that.
I put together a green crab trap yesterday from a 5 gallon bucket, dropped it in the water at the dock when I cast off at 2:00 pm baited with a fish head. When I returned about 7:00 pm, there were 2-3 dozen crabs in it.

More than happy to help. Another use for a bucket with a leak or no handle. Why throw it away. Just wish I had the salt water at my dock you have there. We have such a large fresh water influx comming down the Ct river at this time I can not keep them alive at my dock. Lost about 8 - 10 dozen the other day. Not normal for this time of year.
