Officer Camejo:

I already have a license and my son will get what is necessary but neither Connecticut or New York can/will answer my question which is:

1. My question to you:I have a son that lives in Ma and he and we fish out of Niantic. We occasionally fish the Race, the Sluice, and maybe the south side of Fishers Island. Most fishing is in Ct waters.

What is the best thing for him to do to be legal? Do I need a NY license?

Sure is complicated these day.......ugh!

An old fisherman getting confused and have never violated anything and do not want to. Thanks in advance.

You suggested I contact New York so............

2. This is what I asked New York DEP

I have a Connecticut salt water license and my son lives in Mass and plans to get a Connecticut non resident license for Connectucut.
We fish out of Niantic Bay and launch there. . We occasionally fish the Race, the Sluice, and maybe the south side of Fishers Island or Plum Island. Most fishing is in Ct waters.

What is the best thing for him to do to be legal in your waters? Is he covered by the Connectucut License?

Do I need a NY license or does my Connectucut one take care of that.

Just how far out can I go. Is there something I can refer to so I can stay legal?

Many thanks in advance.

The response from New York I shared earlier......

Are there any reciprocal license agreements with other states where marine waters form boundaries with other states?
Yes, in certain waters, if a state grants New York recreational marine fishing license holders fishing privileges in that state's portion of the boundary water(s), then New York grants appropriately licensed anglers from that state the privilege to fish in the New York portion of the boundary water(s) without securing a New York recreational marine fishing license:

Connecticut: those parts of Long Island Sound lying between New York and Connecticut
New Jersey: those parts of New York Harbor, Hudson River, Kill Van Kull, Arthur Kill, Raritan Bay, and Atlantic Ocean lying between New Jersey and New York, and
Rhode Island: those parts of Long Island Sound, Block Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean lying between Rhode Island and New York.

New Question:Are the three states going to get together and share a map so we know what to do. The only thing I know from the responses is I will be foreced to get a New York license as well and plan to do that till things get clarified.

It sure would be helpful and seems like something that ought to be shared before we start the season. I have been left to interpret it as best I can and cannot afford legal counsel.

Many thanks for trying .......any suggestion who I could contact or should contact to get this reasonable request answered I really think earlier comments about not getting license comes from confusion and frustration. Thank Heavens I am a senior and if I understand things right I will get NY license non resident for the 15 bucks out of pocket but my son has to pay 60 to CT and 15 to New York. If he buys a NY license will Connecticut honor it?

Whew....Gone fishing and you will hear no more frustration from me......Carl
