Went out fishing at Lakewood in Waterbury on Saturday from sun up until 10 am , came across a dozen or so dead catfish floating and 1 largemouth bass. Some one might want to look into what killed all those cats. thanks

AL-M,
We are aware that some of the catfish that we stocked earlier this month unfortunately are turning up dead. It appears that this has been restricted to Lakewood Lake and Lake Mohegan down in Norwich. These were two of the last locations stocked on that day. We believe this delayed mortality is due to delayed stress. The fish for these two locations were on the truck for a somewhat prolonged period (although no longer than other years)and the air and water temperatures did get very warm that day. Catfish from other tanks on the truck, stocked in other locations, appear to have survived well. We did send biologists out to check last week, and it appeared that the worst of this was over. I hope that the dead fish you observed this weekend were the same ones we observed last week. We would appreciate you keeping us informed if you get out fishing there again.

I was checking Lake Mohegan ON 06/19/10 I did see one newly stocked cat that was floating and another cat that was on the surface that seamed to have a large sore between the tail & dorsal fin it was barely alive.

I live 5 minutes from Lakewood & will keep an eye out for dead cats.

You must be right about the transportation issue. Because I have caught some nice healthy cats from the last two years of stocking. The first year these cats grew to 21-3/4" & were fat.

You guys are doing a great job stocking the urban parks.

These cats are a great catch during the ice fishing and are very aggressive.
