I had the pleasure of sharing opening morning of the CT youth turkey hunting day with Atsakeeper63 (Eric) and his son Eric. The cold and frosty dawn found us set up in a ground blind along a green field in the northeastern part of the state. Shortly after 5:00 the birds starting gobbling and the high fives were flying thinking we were in the right place to make something happen. While we had birds gobbling from all around us in the distance, unfortunately for us, we couldn't get any to come closer. After fly down things went completely silent. We stayed in the field a few hours and finally we struck out on foot prospecting and climbing. We worked our way up on top of the ridge where the birds had been roosted, and sure enough the forest floor had been all scratched up, but the birds were gone and we never got any toms to respond to our calls. Over the next few hours we hit 2 other parcels and walked and squalked but could not strike a gobble all day. With the cold wind and cloudy conditions, I don't think the birds were in the mood for love. We packed it in around 3PM, with tired, blood shot eyes and sore legs. Our bellies were empty and Eric Jr was jonesing for Famous Dave's barbeque and a Mountain Dew Coolada. Too funny!! Hopefully we can do it again this Saturday. If I get out and get some slips signed, we may hit a few of my spots and hopefully git r done! Thanks for inviting me along Eric! I had a ball! Here's a few pics of the father and son man-venture
