Jess, thanks for stripping away all the beauty that is bass fishing on TV and showing us what life is like in the trenches. Always enlightening.
BTW, what is a skinny dipper? Never mind, I did a search: http://www.tackletour.com/reviewriskinndip.html

People thought it would take about 6lbs a day on the pro side to get a top 50. Many people were going 14 hours without a keeper bite, with others happy to catch one or two a day. It was bad! Dan Morehead on the other hand was stroking them, literally. Dan is one of the guys I travel with, and he seemed to have found the fish instantly. Dan had found fish deep stroking a jig. Stroking a jig is when you cast a jig out and rip the jig up off the bottom almost like a jigging spoon and let it fall on a slack line. He was catching 10-20 keepers a day.

Sorry I never finished the posts from the last tournament. It went alright, but not how I wanted. I got 2 very difficult draws, not so much because of who they were, but because neither of them was on any fish. The guy I fished with the first day caught 2 fish in the tournament and ended up in 197th place. The guy I had the second day told me he was sorry I had to draw him because he had no idea how to catch fish on this lake. I ended up catching a few fish and coming in 39th, which was pretty respectable considering how my pro-partners did. I'm up in Detroit right now. I just finished practicing today. I was staying up in St Claire Shores because we were practicing on Lake St Claire. The hotel there had no internet, but I switched hotels tonight to be closer to the meeting and takeoff at Elizabeth Park. Finally I can post while I'm actually fishing!

I was pretty excited going into practice for this tournament. Last year in practice Gabe and I crushed big smallies; there was no reason to think this year would be any different. Apparently it can be. The day started off great with my first smallmouth weighing in at well over 5lbs; it was a beauty. It slowed down from there. I ended up catching a respectable 16lbs, but fishing was tough and there weren’t many big ones to be found. Gabe only caught about 12lbs. It was way tougher than I thought it would be. Maybe tomorrow will bring the numbers and size of last year; they’re still there you just have to figure out how to make them bite.

The day started out difficult much like yesterday with quite a few bites but mostly small fish. Surprisingly it ended up being one of my top three fishing days of all time. It was actually quite unbelievable. There had been a mayfly hatch the night before and the mayflies were all over the place; most of them ending up in the belly of a giant smallmouth. Gabe and I probably caught 20 fish over 3 lbs and each of us had over 18 lbs for our best 5 fish. You could catch them on anything you wanted to throw; topwater was the most spectacular though! There's nothing quite like seeing a 4 lb smallie slap a spook 3 feet in the air.

Today wasn't quite as crazy as yesterday. The mayfly hatch was over and it was windy. We did alot of running around and checking different spots. We didn't catch nearly as many fish, but the quality was actually better. Gabe and I both had over 18 lbs catching a few over 4. It was slow though and after a day like yesterday, even big ones didn't seem all that great. Practice is getting better; I hope the tournament follows suit.

I really hope today isn't a sign of things to come. Gabe kicked my butt today. Gabe caught fish after fish and I only caught 5 fish in 12 hours of practice. He ended up with about 17 lbs and I had a mere 12 lbs. I'm not sure what happened, but he thought it was the color tube he was throwing. I don't believe color makes that much of a difference, but Gabe offered me some of the tubes for the tournament and I gladly accepted them. He stipulated however, that if I drew out with him, I was not allowed to use them. After the last 2 days of practice I've decided I'm going to throw a tube most of the time. The dropshot bite isn't what it was last year. I caught that first big one on it, but very few ate it after that. I hope I get good draws in this tournament; I'm definitely due. $40,000 would be really nice right now. Just the gas alone to drive here cost $300.
