I drew out with Brian Thrift in boat 199. I've know Brian for quite a few years now and it should be a good day fishing with him. I think this is the only tournament my wife didn't picked Brian for her fantasy fishing team. He told me we would be fishing out on Erie. In practice he said he had one good day and three bad days; hopefully tomorrow will be a good one. The wind is only supposed to blow 5-10 tomorrow so at least the ride won't be bad. I feel pretty good about this tournament.

The day I fished with Brian Thrift went pretty good. He had his 19 lbs and I had my 17.8 in the first 40 minutes. We each had 2 fish die so we lost 1 lb. I would have been tied for 11th if my fish hadn't died; instead I was in 28th place. I was paired with Chris Mcall the 2nd day and we were going to be fishing out on Erie as well. Chris runs one of the Coppertone wrapped boats. It was pretty windy when I woke up on that second morning. Chris said he had to go back out because he had good fish out there. About half way out to Pelee he started to think it may not have been a good idea. The waves were pretty big and many of them gave a bone jarring blow when they hit just right. We made it to his spot after driving for about 1 1/2 hours. I ended up catching 3 for 9+ and losing one. Chris had one of the worst days I've ever witnessed and Angler having. Nothing seemed to go right for him and I could tell it wasn't going to get any better. He ended up catching 4 for 15+ and losing one. The right size fish were there, but we just couldn't get enough bites. I placed 62 which was not at all what I wanted. I really felt good about this tournament; I thought I could make the cut. Maybe fishing out of my own boat will bring better luck. I leave here after the Family Fun Zone on Sunday night and will drive through Canada to Lake Champlain for the Stren Series Tournament

I don't know if anyone has driven through Canada lately, but the gas prices are not in dollars per gallon, and it's probably better that you don't know how much it costs. I filled my gas tank up before I left Detroit. My fuel started getting low somewhere around Toronto so I stopped for gas at a rest area. The prices there were listed as Canadian currency per liter which means nothing to me; I was already having problems figuring out how fast I was going. I think the speed limit was 110 kmh? Anyway, I stopped for gas; the gas pump stopped at $100 and I was on my way. I looked at my gas gage as I pulled away and it was just over a 1/2 tank. I later found out that gas is $6 a gallon there. I looked at my gps and my gas gage and estimated that I should be able to get within 20 miles of the US border on the gas I had. I was willing to chance it. I got to the US border with the low fuel light on. Luckily there was an Indian Reservation just over the border that had untaxed gas, so I filled up my truck and my boat there. The guy at the gas station said he had never seen so much gas pumped at one time. He walked back over to the truck with my credit receipt and promptly apologized for what he was about to give me. The gas cost $280. The price of gas is having an impact on every fisherman. I don't know how long I can afford to pay with the gas prices the way they are. Between the Detroit and Champlain tournaments I will have spent about $1400 in gas alone. I need to win some money!

I arrived in Plattsburgh NY at 1am on Monday morning. I pulled into the Rip Van Winkle Motel, got my room and went to sleep. The ride from Detroit was about 9 hours and I was exhausted. I set my alarm for 5:30am. It was already almost time to get up. I had planned to fish the Northern end of the lake, but a last minute call from Dave Wolak made me think twice and I decided to go check out Ticonderoga for one of my 2 practice days. I caught some good fish flipping and on a toad, but I didn't have a good feeling about the fishing there. I decided it wasn't worth the ride. When I got back from Ti Dusty had moved into the room and was working on his tackle. He was going to practice with me on the last day of practice. We drove up to Vermont to get our licenses and to launch up in the Northern end of the lake. I wanted to concentrate my efforts on one area since we had such little time to look. I had caught some fish in the windmill point area before and decided that was as good a place as any to start. Dusty and I found some good fish. I caught some, and Dusty being the fine Co-angler he is shook them off so I could catch them in the tournament; I personally think Dusty just doesn't know how to catch fish. I was excited about the fish we found not because I wanted to fish there for them, but because I thought I could go over into the Inland Sea and run that same pattern there. I don't fish much outside the Inland Sea, so I feel much more comfortable fishing in there. We got off the water about 2 and got gas in Vermont where it was $4.08; it's sad when you're excited about paying that little for gas. When we got back to the room Chris Hall had arrived and was sitting outside the room relaxing in a colorful and comfortable Rip Van Winkle porch chair. To save some money there were 3 of us staying in a 2 bed room. It was me, Dusty and Chris Hall; Chris got the shaft and had to sleep on the floor in between the 2 beds. It was shaping up to be an interesting tournament.

I decided to start in the Inland Sea and fish areas that I knew. The fish were not where I thought they would be, and most of the grass that's usually there was gone. I started shallow and worked my way out deeper. In about 10' of water I caught a keeper and then lost a 4+ on a dropshot. I continued to fish without a bite and decided that I should run back into the main lake. When I arrived on my area up in the North end of the lake I caught a 3+ on my first cast. I stayed for the rest of the day and was able to grind out a small limit. I knew the quality fish were there and thought if I stayed long enough eventually they would bite. I ended up with 12.0 lbs which was good enough for 51st.
