They stock the Little Bantam river. Maybe they should put 50 or so trout in and call it a stocked body of water. If the trout get eaten? Just a little more protein for the spawners. Wayne
I fish fresh and salt as well as crab.Streams,rivers,ponds,lakes,bays,oceans.I buy a license so I can keep when I am going to eat it and throw back when I am not.
than why is mansfield hollow closed now? mansfield hollow does not have any trout left in it and as far as i've seen in years is not stocked with them anymore either. shouldn't mansfield be open to bass fishing than too? like bantam is. there may be trout in the rivers leading into it but none of them make it to the lake to survive that i've seen. to me that doesn't constitute it as a lake that has trout in it.
There is something intriguing about this. It has been proven by anglers, research and other methods, that pike will attack almost any size prey. This is also true for Pickerel. Both species are similar, and for the most part, tackle and gear are the same as you would use for Pike. If I were to use steel leaders (which I never do) or heavy mono, larger baits and so on, it does not necessarly mean that I am looking for Pike. I could be fishing for Pickerel for all I know, for which there is no closed season. Without being more specific, I really think that Bantam should be closed after March 1-st, in order to avoid any further confusion or conflicts. Just my 2 cents.
Why is Bantam the only pike lake that has a closed season specifically on pike to protect the spawners? There are pike in other lakes that are preparing to spawn right now as well and those lakes are either closed because of trout season or still open (such as pachaug). Why aren't the spawning pike in those lakes protected too?

the pike aren't "spawning" in those lakes. Bantam and Mansfield have marshes where they spawn, it is believed that they do not spawn highly successfully at the others thus there is no protection of them.

If there gonna close mansfield they should close Bantam! Both have rivers or streams that are stocked. And as for No gas outboards umm.. how long has Bantam had pike in it?Last report I read said the pike in Bantam were healthy.Enough with the restrictions Please.Just one fishermans thoughts.

And if they do that, then they should also close down the stretch of river adjacent to marker 53. This is the entrance to the spawning area in Haddam Meadows. In a week or so, we'll be seeing reports of the shore gang pounding the snot out of the pike as they stage up for the spawn. More pike per angler\hour are caught here than any other area in the state. If there is truly an interest in letting the pike spawn unimpeded, it should start there...
I personally have no problems with them closing specific lakes to protect the spawning pike, and if they feel they need to do it, they should.
I'm interested though in how people would feel if they started doing this for all of the major game species on at least a few lakes. What if the trophy bass lakes were closed during the spawning season, would people support this or cry foul? I guess only bass and pike would be applicable for spawning closures since they're the two most popular it seems.
