Late report. Left late afternoon Sat for Block Canyon with Pops, Marco & Conrad. Toss the lines in about 16 miles North of BC, pulled in a 70lb yellow right at sunset.
During the ruckus of getting the fish bled and gutted Marco got a flutter jig hook buried deep in his angle, not sure how that happened. Fish on ice then played surgeon on the ankle, popped the hook all the way thru as Marco struggled not to pass out. Bent the barbs down and with the help of pliers pulled the hook all the way out, ankle in ice.
Nothing all night. On the troll in the morning, no hits. Stopped at a couple high-flyers on the way in, put 30 Mahi in the box.
Nice Yellow....they seem spotty at best from the reports I'm seeing. Sounds like a great trip with all the mahi! Too bad about the hook in the ankle. I've never seen it that bad, but certainly had some close calls.
Nice yellow. Ditto on getting a bolt cutter. I've been meaning to do it for years. It's also a reminder to the crew of why I'm such a prick about unnecessary rods hanging on the sides of the Bonar box with treble hooks hanging off them. Same goes for little squid jigs believe it or not. I have absolutely NEVER caught a squid on one out at the canyons, but I have certainly stuck them in my cheek a couple of times. Leave the damn things home.
I've got gas and I've got crabs. You wanna go out?

I put bolt cutters in my boat right AFTER Alfonso/Legalfish was unhooking a Striper on a topwater plug and hike doing that the thrashing Striper drove the heavy gage hook right thru his thumb. Too bad, but it gave me the chance to drive his Porsche to the ER…..alwayzzz a sliver lining. ……but I think I took the bolt cutters out because they were rusting up. I need to find or replace them.
Crushing the barbs down and pushing back thru is a decent option though.
