I'm just wondering why they are illegal in CT and not in other states. They all have cull rings to let the small crabs out.

And why we have to be present with our traps at all times?

I'm not a commercial fisherman and I do not have $150 a year to pay the state for a commercial permit in order to use a few of these traps.

Thanks

I could be wrong but I've always thought it was to keep from drowning Diamondback Terrapins .

.

"Politically correct" was initially coined by Leon Trotsky to refer favorably to those whose views remained in sync with the ever-shifting Bolshevik Party line. This was important, as "not PC" people risked prison or death.

I once caught a diamond back terrapin in a box crab trap on the DEP pier. Barely fit in the trap. They have a really long neck and will try to bite if your not too careful. Tossed him back in.

Because I don't like them........

I honestly don't know, however, the diamondback terrapin reason sounds reasonable to me. If you look at their habitat and food choices they're right where you would be crabbing.

Not sure we'll ever know but the diamondback terrapin reasoning could be true. Although, they exist in the southern states where those traps are the norm.

Another reason to maintain the ban on ChesBay style traps is "ghosting." Often they get lost and continue to kill, kill, kill for ages.

If you want crabs, attend your lines and traps. Live with it.
