Unfortunately we have a lot of people who have no consideration for others. They leave their trash behind with no concern for what the trash will do.

If our officers catch them in the act, they are facing fines of $219 to $319.

As Kierran posted (thanks!), different community based organizations get together to conduct river cleanups. I believe Trout Unlimited does an annual cleanup on the Naugatuck River. Maybe there's a fishing/kayacking/canoeing group who would like to adopt the Housatonic River. There is a "Save the Housatonic" group (http://savethehousatonic.org/) but their website looks like their primary focus has to do with the damage GE has done upriver. There is also "CleanSound" (http://cleansound.org/id3.html), they do cleanups on the lower Housatonic, maybe they would consider extending upriver.

I'm all for clean-up efforts, but without law enforcement, all we would be doing is just making the place more enjoyable for all the "litterbugs" for a brief period of time. That is until they inevitably trash the place...

I'm pretty sure the DEP has higher priorities (and is already understaffed), so I'm not expecting a miracle, but until these people decide its not worth it anymore to go down there, they'll just keep on doing it. And this is just one of the many spots that get abused all over the state.

The thought of picking up other people's dirty diapers just to make the place better for the same scumbags that left them in the first place really grinds my gears.

Very unfortunate. Came across this link, they have organized cleanups in the past and might have suggestions or resources to get put something together.

I think people need have a little pride and speak up when they see things like this happen. I have heard it said on here many times that people see littering or poaching happen, but are scared to say anything or it is law enforcement's responsiblity to handle it.

That is "the pussification of America" in effect..

If I see it, I say something and the crap gets picked up. I have never had an issue yet. Just two weeks ago 2 guys were getting ready to leave behing a pile of beer cans, oatmeal containers, etc. at the Greenville Dam. I asked them politely to have a little respect and clean up after themselves. They did and apoligized....no problem.

i went to the area today, and can confirm that it is indeed a disaster area, absolutely disgusting. i called the tip line, and filed a second report with a gentleman who had read the original report, and mentioned they would be looking into it. figure if there is a mid day patrol in the area friday sat and sunday they'll get a few of these garbage leaving diaper disposing jerks. it was really bad down there.
