I own private property along the Farmington River and I have had several problems with people driving down the dirt road that leads to my property and dumping. Recently this has taken a turn for the worse with car engine parts (very oily and probably contaminating the river) being dumped. Does the DEP have any surveillance cammeras that could be set up to catch the morons that do this stuff.

No, we don't have anything available. You could borrow or buy a game camera. That would date and time stamp the photo. There are infrared cameras available that won't show any light when photos are taken at night.
Make sure you let the local PD know about this too. They can let their patrols know to keep an eye on the area.
Thanks for responding. It seems the state could pretty quickly reimburse the cost of something like this with fines for the idiots that think our Rivers are personal dumping stations. It seems the same places continuously get dumped on, so it would make sense for the state to start monitoring these areas. I haven't had any luck with the local patrols as it is pretty hard to catch the perpetrators in the act. I understand the state is under a tremendous amount of pressure to cut costs but I can see this being a money maker!
Eric- You are absolutely right!! Some of the charges for getting rid of different bulky items almost guarantee this type of illegal behavior. People who litter by throwing away a deposit bottle or can that they could redeem for the deposit aren't going to pay $25 to legally dispose of a matress. I've helped many of my landowners with my pickup on my excursions. Tires seem to be a common item left behind. I helped Enconn to track down a local "U-call we haul" operation that left a vehicle behind in three different locations(in their country they said it was very acceptable). The owner who hired them was held accountable and I was told the look on his face was "priceless". If it had been taken to a junkyard they actually might have gotten something for it.
I caught some guys dumping crap in my swamp one night . It was not a good night for them . First I blocked them in then called the cops . Had to laugh the cops had them walking in knee deep muck for a few hours getting all the crap cleaned back up and then they got busted to boot .

Illegal dumping and people complaining is why we have gated state land areas imo. It's complete BS to hike anywhere that people can drive to and see the amount of garbage left behind. Tragedy of the commons.
An IR trail camera may be just the thing to do. One at the dump site and another set up to try and catch a license plate.
It is a big problem and limits access to fishermen. Unfortunately, I have had to put a cable accross the pulloff to my property due to the dumping. It is a shame because I could care less if someone were fishing on my property. So now I have to spend money on cameras and dump fees to stop this and get rid of the garbage. One other option is petitioning the other land owners that use the dirt road and put up a gate so no one can drive in. I wish the state could step in when you have a problem area and use some kind of surveillence to catch these people that ruin things for the rest of us. It is unbelievable how much crap lines the rivers in our state.
I don't buy the argument that dump fees cause these problems. It really is just selfish idiots that probably could pay for the fees but would rather spend money on cigs or beer or who knows what else. Makes my blood boil!
