I had the day off from work today so I decided to go fishing. As you know, Candlewood is closed as of today for trout stocking, so I decided to drive over to Lilly and see what was going on there. I tried launching my boat 10 different ways, but the lake was so far down that I would have had to wreck my trailer to get in. I drove over to check out the other launch down the lake, and that was hopeless as well. I decided to drive over the mountain and go fish on Zoar. The fishing up river was slow with temperatures in the low 40's. I fished there for about 3 hours withouth a bite. I decided I should check out the lower end of the lake to see what it was like down there. I ended up finding some warmer water before the end of the day and boated 3 bass; two good smallmouth and a big black. I caught the largemouth on a jig, one smallie on a hair jig, and one on a hollow belly swimbait. It was pretty slow, but once I found that warmer water(53 degrees), the fish were more willing to bite. In one of the pictures you can see the crayfish that jumped out of the bass' mouth when I boat flipped him. Smallies are sooooo greedy!

Thanks for the local report Jess. All three fish look healthy and of good size.

Don't doubt in the dark what you learned in the light.

I had off from work today so I headed over to Lilly to see how the fishing was. I'd been hearing rumors that the fishing was awesome there. I talked to Terry Baksay when I was out there today and he said the fishing there last week was exceptional; I've never heard the words Lilly and exceptional in the same sentence before in a positive way. I started off up the lake fishing just outside the big cove on the left. I caught one in the first 5 minutes on a wiggle wart. I worked my way back into the cove and caught another nice smallie on a hollowbelly. I moved around a bunch after that and caught mostly small ones. The water temp was about 53 everywhere you went on the lake. I ran down to the dam end and started fishing some of those pea-gravel points and caught this giant 6-3 largemouth on a jerkbait.

After catching that big one and fishing every point to death without anymore success I decided to make a move. I ended up running into the Shepaug and catching a bunch of small fish; that's where I finished the day out. Fishing was better than it normally is for me there, but I wouldn't say it was exceptional. I caught fish on just about everything I threw. It won't be long before these fish are cruising looking for a good place to spawn. I think the bass may have been biting so well the week before because the water was flowing and on the rise, putting the fish shallow and in the mood to eat. My best 5 fish today probably weighed about 15 pounds. Not bad for Lilly! If I don't have work tomorrow I'll be out again and we'll see what effect a 90 degree day has on these fish.

Cabela's is having their Fishing Classic weekend this Saturday and Sunday. I will be there from 9-4 doing a seminar each day on springtime fishing tactics for Candlewood Lake. Hope to see
everyone there!

A 6-3 largemouth out of Lilly seems pretty exceptional to me. It would be great to see that lake back on the upswing. It seems when they started dropping the copper sulfate in there a few years back for weed eradication, the fishing just fell off the charts, some what like the economy.
Again Jess, thanks for the local report.

I wish I had better news about the fishing today, but it was just terrible for me. I fished for about 4 hours catching just two little smallies. Around noon my global warming allergies hit and I had to go home and lay on the couch; I think I might have a sinus infection..... Arghhh! The water temperature rose to over 60 degrees in some places on lilly, and I saw fish cruising the banks in packs. Of couse the fish wouldn't bite, but I like seeing the fish up that shallow. If the weather stays like this there might be a fish or two on beds by this weekend.
