I just looked at the standings and don't feel quite as bad as I did earlier. I am in some pretty good company down there at the bottom. The top 30 cut is only 9 lbs, so if I catch 18 lbs tomorrow I can fish on Saturday. There's still hope yet!

My first Pro tournament of the year did not go quite as well as I had hoped. People caught fish all around me in the tournament and no matter what I threw I couldn’t catch a keeper. I probably caught 40 shorts during the 2 tournament days. There were 2 people that I know of who finished in the top 10 that were a cast away. I was fishing a long grass bed at the mouth of the Susquehanna River. There was a main channel swing that came up along the shore and the grass bed ran along it. I threw everything from a swimbait to a shaky head. It was very frustrating seeing others catching keepers just feet away while I continued to struggle. I ended up with the dreaded double zero; my only comfort was in knowing that I was about to drive to Lake Norman and catch a bunch of keepers. I dropped my Co-angler off and headed for the hotel. I talked with the owner of the hotel a few days before and asked if I could leave my boat there for the week while I was in NC. He said that would be fine and I was relieved that my gas cost would be cut in half not having to tow the boat all the way to NC. I unhooked my boat, piled all my tackle in my Yukon, covered my boat and was on my way.

FLW Tour #3
Lake Norman - North Carolina
Water Temp: 58-63
Pre/Spawn/Post (a little of everything)

I rolled into the rental house around 1:30am, exhausted and grouchy. I was alive though, and that’s always good. I had to call my wife with about an hour to go so that I would not fall asleep at the wheel. She talked me through the last hour and I arrived in one piece. I threw my sleeping bag on the couch and went to sleep. I heard an alarm go off at 5am and was hoping I was just dreaming; no such luck. I called the night before to make sure I could practice with someone; Suggs already had someone and Moorehead didn’t want my bad luck to rub off on him, so Jeremiah said I could go with him. I tried to throw together whatever I could for that first day of practice. My truck was a mess and it was a pain trying to find what I needed. The first thing I hear in the morning is Suggs saying “Hey, Double Ott made”. After some choice words for him, I get up and get ready to go. The weather is setting up to be beautiful and sunny, and that makes me happy after the miserable weather we had up at the Chesapeake. We get out on the water by 6am and it’s a chilly 44 degrees. We head out on the lake stop at some docks he’s caught some fish on before. Jeremiah starts throwing a shaky head and I start with a 4” hollow belly; I catch a short black on my first cast. I would go on to give Jeremiah a good stomping, out fishing him 10 to 1. We ended up catching 70 fish the first day of practice, with my best 5 weighing about 9 lbs; all keepers were spotted bass. It was nice to catch keeper fish again. Once again the sun is setting on a fun filled day of practice.

I took a picture of this sign at the boat launch because it was disturbing to me.

We spent our second day of practice fishing in the Northern end of the lake looking for spawning largemouth. We found very few on beds, and the docks that we did fish up there didn’t have many fish on them at all. I ended up catching only 8 fish that day, but still had about 8lbs for my 5 best fish. Jeremiah thinks sight fishing will play a big roll in the tournament and is concerned that he hasn’t found more on beds. I agree with him, but think that whoever can find a few good blacks on beds and can then go catch a few good spots fishing during the remainder of the day will win the tournament.
