One reason is so your non boater on day two cannot take you to the fish that his boater on day one was on. Pros are expected to find their own fish. It is part of being a pro.

The rule is actually in effect for a long period before the tournament begins. This prevents the pro from seeking out local guides or local pros and getting information about what the fish are doing anytime near the tournament time from them. It levels the playing field.

There is a no information rule to level the playing field. Pros can only share info with other pros participating in the tournament. This begins almost 3 weeks before the tournament begins. There is an official 2 week off limit period before the 4 practice days begin. Before this off limits period you can get information from whoever you want. The rule makes it so that an angler who can afford to buy information can no longer do it days before the tournament begins. I've heard stories of people hiring guides to go out during spawn tournaments and find fish for people. This new rule cuts things like that out. It also serves to make things fare for the pros as far as fishing with a co is concerned. Not every co-angler has as much experience as me. If there had not been a no information rule at the last tournament I could have suggested my pro try fishing a back creek containing a certain type of grass. We may have gone there and wore the fish out. Another pro may have been having a bad day and had a co that didn't know as much and did terrible. My pro has now beaten other pros who found fish on there own without someone else’s help. I like the rule, but it can be a real drag when you know what to do and your pro doesn't.

The fancy sponsors that I had on my shirt were paying my way. Unfortunately I was laid off just like thousands of other Americans this year. I now have to pay my own way until times get better. I think there is a gross misconception about the amount of cash money that anglers receive from sponsors. There are very few anglers who have paying sponsors. I was very fortunate to have an FLW Team sponsorship. Most sponsorships are for product, and many times not much of it. All those wrapped boats you see out there belong to the fisherman. They have bank notes on them just like anyone else. There are maybe 10 Pro's that I know out of hundreds who are given a boat. Having your way paid is more of an exception than a rule. I know allot of big time BASS and FLW Pro's. I have a friend who fishes the BASS Elites; he absolutely tore it up the first year he fished and won like 200k. He was running a wrapped boat and doing exceptionally well. He wasn't getting paid a cent by his sponsor. He's a prominent figure in fishing and I'm sure everyone on this site has heard of him. Yes, there is money out there to be had from sponsors, but it's very difficult to find and even harder to get. If it were as simple as getting a better public relations agent, there would be a whole lot more Professional Anglers.

So who pays to wrap the boat, it kind of sucks that Gain is getting free advertising and you get to do laundry with it!

I haven't had the Gain wrap on my boat since December of 2007. As soon as I changed sponsors, the Gain logos were removed from my boat. There are however many people running wraps for no pay at all. I went to a company with a proposal for running a wrapped boat for them; I was asking for the company to pay my entry fees and travel expenses for a particular trail. They offered to pay to wrap my boat and that was what they were willing to do. I didn't take it because it paid me nothing. Another angler took the deal, running a wrapped boat just to run a wrapped boat. I've even heard of people paying to have their boats wrapped just to be able to run a wrap and feel like they're part of something. If you hear someone talking about their sponsors paying for everything and them getting everything for free, you should take it with a grain of salt. First of all it's not that common, and secondly it's in violation of their contract to be talking about what their sponsors are doing for them. I try and give as much information as I can about my sponsors and fishing on a whole. I myself am under contract not to talk about what I receive from my sponsors, but you can be assured that what I am able to tell you is the truth. I write these posts so people who are interested in possibly doing this as more than a hobby have an idea of how everything works.

I'd love to see a nationwide boycott on a few of fishings biggest sponsored products just for the reasons stated above. Just to let them know the impact that you guys have on the everyday fisherman like us. Money talks and a lack of profits screams.
Didn't a few pros try to get something like a union going a few years back to combat this type of issue?

Like you said, only a few of the elite have good paid deals. Ike told Rivernut, that some of his sponsors give him gas or preapid Visa cards

I'm still home and I don't think I will be attending the Table Rock tournament. I called FLW to pay my entry fee last week and they informed me that because I had missed the deadline for paying balances they had given my spot away to someone else. I can't blame them; I missed the due date without realizing it. A miscommunication has seemingly ruined my whole season in the FLW Tour. I am first on the waiting list to get into the tournament, but I don't think I'll get in. At this point all balances have been paid and someone would have to be willing to give up $800 not to fish. I could travel out there and hope for the best, but that would cost about $1,000 and I may not even get to fish. I can't risk that money gambling on someone not showing up. If someone cancels before the meeting I will jump in my truck and drive out there; otherwise I won't be fishing. Unfortunately if I miss this tournament I will have no chance at winning Co-angler of the year and it will be difficult to even make the championship. I've paid all my deposits for the rest of the year so this does not happen again; the damage has already been done though. It's hard for me to accept that so early in the year my season is already over.
