Unions help to this day. John, you're lucky enough in enjoy a job in which people don't take advantage of you. Many don't. Even "white" collar workers need the help of unions once in a while.
Ex: Look at the starting salary of a commuter pilot in the 1990's. You had to pay $14k to be given a slot in the right seat. After that, you were paid $16k. So you made $2k your first year. Unions came in and stopped the practice of commuter airlines making employees pay for training and increased their salary.
